What Makes it American? Have you ever purchased something based off the name of the product? Jack in the box is an American fast-food restaurant. The first “Jack in the Box opened in 1951 and expanded to the East and Midwest under ownership of Ralston Purina Co.”(Kramer) They have “more than 2,200 quick-serve restaurants in 21 states and Guam” (Jackintheboxinc) making Jack in the box one of the leading fast-food chains in the nation. Since Jack in the box acknowledges that customers like to customize their food order, they do not make the food items until a customer orders it, making it fresh. Jack in the Box has made a combo meal called the “All American Jack Combo”. This combo meal includes a burger, french fries, and a soft drink for $4.99. Jack in the Box was the cause of many people contracting E. coli O157:H7. The cause of the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak was “traced to undercooked hamburgers from Jack in the Box restaurants, has prompted Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy to call for new federal procedures to ensure safer meat.” (Shapiro) This was a serious problem as “Hundreds of people became ill and four people died from eating adulterated hamburger patties served at Jack in the Box restaurants in the Pacific Northwest.” (Bricher) After the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, it prompted people to think “This was a wakeup call that there were some fundamental problems in our food safety system.” (PBS) There must be a reason why this outbreak was possible, the right procedures were not used that lead to this to happen. After the outbreak, Jack in the Box made sure to never repeat their actions that may lead to another dangerous situation. Jack in the Box started to change the way they operated their business and also how they inspected their food.
