The cause of the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak was “traced to undercooked hamburgers from Jack in the Box restaurants, has prompted Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy to call for new federal procedures to ensure safer meat.” (Shapiro) This was a serious problem as “Hundreds of people became ill and four people died from eating adulterated hamburger patties served at Jack in the Box restaurants in the Pacific Northwest.” (Bricher) After the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, it prompted people to think “This was a wakeup call that there were some fundamental problems in our food safety system.” (PBS) There must be a reason why this outbreak was possible, the right procedures were not used that lead to this to happen.
