Interventional Radiology: Team Analysis

Improved Essays
The teamwork I saw on the ACC unit and during my time at interventional radiology could use some improvement. During my time on the ACC unit on Monday I had completed some of my tasks and was then following my nurse around. I quickly noticed the phone kept ringing, many call lights were going off, and everyone appeared to be very busy. Apparently, several people decided to go on lunch at the same time. The people communicated to their partner they were going but since several people left at the same time it left the floor unprepared. I watched the extra staff transporter help answer a call light that ended up taking her a large majority of time because the patient could not be left alone in the bathroom. The transporter had told one of the nurses she would help get her patient set up in their room because they were completed with surgery and coming to the floor. …show more content…
While I think it is effective to work as a team and through partners. I think it is smarter to stagger all of the lunches due to the lack of people on the floor when half of the nurses decide to go on lunch at the same time. I think there needed to be more conversation via all the nurses and not just the partners. I think if the partner is extremely swamped they need to be vocal in telling their partner they probably should not leave yet because they would be unable to cover all of the patients. My unit did not have a list of what patient room numbers went with each nurse which left a lot of nurses’ scrabbling to figure out who they needed to find or call to help with various call lights. On another part of my unit there is a white board in clear site that says which nurses go with each

The nurses also had a strong relationship to their managers enough to where they felt comfortable asking clarifying questions or even respectfully questioning/disagreeing with the way something was being done. The managers were very supportive and would often circulate the unit to offer assistance when nurses needed an extra hand. They also asked the nurses opinions about staffing and safety. I really appreciated the…

During my first deployment to Afghanistan, I took the opportunity to observe the ER team at the role 3 hospital in Bagram Air Force Base. As the largest military installation, and site of the most advance hospital in Afghanistan, Bagram has become a major hub for medical care in Afghanistan. Therefore, the scenes at the ER can only be described as chaotic due to the constant flow of patients. On my first day at the ER, three members of the Afghan national army was currently under operation What seemed like disarray and chaos in the ER at first glance later unfolded into a sense of organized chaos after a closer observation of how they interacted with one another. Everyone on the team had a specific role to do and accomplished their task trough…

According to Hamric (2014), team work should be included in the required competencies in institutions and should be incorporated into the advanced practice nursing education. Team work makes patient care a lot smoother and could improve patient outcomes. Collaboration in the health care system encourages learning because each health care department is different. Team work improves patient satisfaction because patients can tell a lot of the time when collaborative effort is utilized during their care. Team work enables the patient to understand one plan of care rather than having different people saying different things about their health.…

If I were a manager on a busy surgical unit with low patient satisfaction scores due to noise levels, I would take the approach of an interactional leader. This type of leader fosters autonomy, values and empowers members of the team (Marquis & Houston, 2015). Some strategies might include lowering lights` at a certain time, placing signs on unit and assigning a special room for team collaboration. This room would prevent medical personal from gathering around the nursing station and patient rooms. I would name this room “the chat box”.…

The AACN suggests nurses nurse staffing must ensure an effective match between nurse skills and patient needs (AACN, 2016). Not only does inappropriate staffing lead to medical errors, it can also bring about stressed and overworked nurses. The unit I work on is often short-staffed leading nurses to take on more than they are used to and leaving charge nurses scrambling to assign duties and calling in reinforcements. To the best of my ability, I will try to match my nurse’s abilities to the patient’s acuities and request critique if the assignments do not work effectively with current staffing. In order to address the staffing needs and the workflow that changes hour to hour, I believe the implementation of a resource nurse role will help address the staffing needs when patient loads become hectic.…

Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation. My clinical rotation as a student nurse did not only imply observing the providers, but also meant active participation on my part. Being engaged, enabled me to put into practice what I have learned in theory. The first day of my rotation, the nurse permitted me to augment the Pitocin dose by two units after 20 minutes. I thought that was exciting because I learned about the medication in the class and participated in administering it.…
