Intervention In Haiti

The catastrophe encouraged Haiti’s government to make a step forward and take a better responsibility for their country. Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive with an interim reconstruction agency, co-chaired by Bill Clinton work together on eliminating corruption. “Strict rules for transparency and accountability” (The Washington Post), should make them trustworthy to donors. Moreover, there should be more cooperation between government and non-governmental aid organizations to help use the aid in more effective way. Another important issue that would improve Haiti image in investors is democratic elections that had to be put on hold due to earthquake. A lot or effort has to be taken to make all of that work.

Another problem in Haiti are Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs). According to “The National Academy of Public Administration study showed that NGOs were running 80 percent of the social services in the country, which severely limits the ability of the government and private professionals to develop the skills and capacity they need to run the programs themselves” (Adelman, 93). That shows how incompetent the government is. Even though the government showed interest in changes, years of unstable ruling, corruption and neglecting their people made the officials very untrustworthy. The government didn’t make any changes in their economy after the quake; Haiti is still depending on donations and they letting NGOs to take over governmental responsibilities. Without changes to gain economic autonomy, Haiti will remain in crisis. Government should work now on making Haiti more appealing for foreign investors how could invest in small businesses, which would be a good start for further
