OMEGA SUPPORTS EXTENSION OF TPS FOR HAITIANS
Washington, DC - In a matter of weeks, the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) extended to some 50,000 Haitians living in the United States will expire and unless extended most of them will be deported to an uncertain future in a country still dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters. After the devastating earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince on January 12, 2010, the Obama administration granted Temporary Protected Status to Haitian immigrants who were already in the United States. This protected status protects them from deportation. The decision of whether to extend TPS depends on one very important factor, and that is whether conditions in the immigrant’s home country have improved that upon return they will not face inhuman treatment. In a few weeks, TPS will expire and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly must decide whether to renew the Temporary Protected Status of the group. During the presidential elections, candidate Trump (the first Republican candidate to campaign in a Haitian community) visited little Haiti in Miami at the request of Omeganews and Mr. Trump told the Haitian community in no uncertain term that he wants to be the champion of the Haitian community, and the community believed him. Omeganews and the Haitian community expect the President to extend TPS to all qualified Haitian immigrants because the situation in Haiti that caused them to leave the country has not improved. In fact, there are nearly 15 thousand people still living in makeshift tents in Port-au-Prince. The situation in Haiti has not improved for many reasons, but the most important reason is the endemic corruption plaguing the Haitian government. Between 2006 and 2016, more than 2 billion dollars of the PetroCaribe fund had been embezzled by former Prime ministers Jean Max Bellerive, five finance ministers including the current Chief of Staff of President Jovenel Moise - Mr. Wilson Laleau. The 2 billion dollar PetroCaribe funds could have been used to build houses that these people could have benefited from; or to create an economic situation that would enable these people to come back home. It is sad that the same people who created the dire situation in Haiti are now asking President Trump to extend TPS to Haitian immigrants. A week ago, Mr. …show more content…
Wilson Laleau, the Chief of Staff of Haitian President Jovenel Moise told the Miami Herald that President Moise will appeal directly to President Trump to request that the TPS be extended as Haiti is still dealing with the consequences of the earthquake that hit Port-Au-Prince, in 2010. Putting the earthquake aside which occurred seven years ago, there were ample opportunities in the ensuing years for the Haitian government to turn things around. In the last ten years, both the Preval administration (God Bless his soul- Rene Preval died a few months ago) and the Martelly administration were more interested in lining their pockets then helping fellow Haitians. It is rather ironic that Wilson Laleau the ring-leader of the Petrocaribe conspiracy is now telling American media about his government outreach to help Haitian immigrants. It is sad that the same people who created the situation that makes it hard for Haitians to return home are the exact same people who claim to represent their interests. The level of hypocrisy is deafening. It is highly unlikely that the White House would consider such an appeal from the Moise government whose chief of staff had been accused of embezzling billions of dollars from the Petrocaribe fund as minister of finance - money that could have been used to help relocate victims of natural disasters. Omeganews wholeheartedly and without reservations supports the extension of TPS for all law-abiding Haitians who are currently living in the United States. Nevertheless, we also the support the Department of Homeland Security's action in determining the criminal and social status of TPS beneficiaries. One in this country under TPS should not be committing crimes, or be an undue burden to the country. Nevertheless, OWN wishes to caution the Department of Homeland Security that request for criminal data of an entire community is a bit unsettling especially when the law governing TPS does not make such data a condition for granting or extending
