Before the earthquake in 2010, Haiti’s health care system was finally making a step forward. However, the earthquake quickly destroyed the small infrastructure Haiti had. The country lacks sufficient number of trained nurses, doctors, and medical staff. Haiti is trapped in a period of disease, disability, and poverty, (Redmond, n.d.). Although dozens of organizations bring medical relief work over to Haiti, it simply isn’t enough to reinstate the infrastructure of Haiti. The problem with the healthcare in Haiti is that is no system, no structure, or no plan to fix the system. The solution of the healthcare is especially hard to solve when the government of the country has no system, no structure, or no plan to get fixed. In the United States, the government has a health care infrastructure that allows people to seek medical attention. During the Civil War, the federal government began to build hospitals to tend to sick and wounded soldiers. Many states began to build hospitals too. Today there are many hospitals, clinics, doctor’s office and other health care facilities owned by private and public entities for citizens to seek treatment. The U.S. the government has developed programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare provides health care coverage to those over the age of 65 or have severe disability no matter their …show more content…
I was overwhelmed with the number of people and cars that crowed the streets as we made the journey to the orphanage. What took merely 20 minutes to the airport the day of departure, took 2 hours the day of arrival. There was so much color in Haiti: colored houses, colored cars, and colored people. The smell of the pollution was overwhelming; my nostrils were black from the constant burning of trash.
