Haiti After the Earthquake, by Dr. Paul Farmer, is about the author’s experience in Haiti after the earthquake of 2010. The first eight chapters are written from Dr. Paul Farmer’s perspective and the second part of the book is written from other people’s perspective and how they dealt with the damage of the earthquake. The Haiti earthquake devastated the already struggling country. Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and over half of the population lives on $1 dollar a day.
The book begins with Dr. Paul Farmer talking about his arrival in Haiti. He was in Haiti three days after the earthquake. On January 12, 2010 a massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0, occurred in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and killed hundreds of thousands of people. In Haiti, they do not know how to adequately prepare for the damaging events of earthquakes and other natural disasters. The one seismologist knew that the event was inevitable, but did not do anything. The public was not notified and was not as updated as people in the United States are. The government did not take the earthquake as seriously as they could have. They lacked money and other resources and most Haitians were not able to evacuate. Many people in Haiti felt that the government did not respond, only international groups responded.
The book was released in 2011. At the time of the book, there was almost no recovery. Now, there are some places that are nearing recovery, but there was a lot of damage from the earthquake and other weather events such as, Hurricane Matthew, which cost Haiti almost $1.9 billion
