The interprofessional core competencies provide a list to analyze the effectiveness of the work performed by the team. Interprofessional communication is integral, and our group understood the importance of open discussion. It made it easy to work with a group of people who saw the benefits of effective communication. Throughout this process, I realized that I am more inclined to listen, then speak. I like to hear others’ input before addressing mine because I find value in learning from different ideas and perspectives. This seemed to work for me, but I also could see myself instigating more conversation in the future. The problem with my approach is that if no one starts the discussion, I won’t provide my contribution. In the future, I hope to grow more confident in my convictions that I do not need an invitation to speak. Another aspect that goes hand-in-hand with communication is the ability to work in a group. Group work is always difficult because the end product is dependent on contributions from the entire team. Working in groups has taught me to trust that work will get done and made me realize that I am nt in control of everything. I know that the best way to address all of a patient’s needs is to get everyone involved in the decision making – doctors, nurses, social workers, and families. Using a hypothetical situation allows us to learn the important concepts of team-based practice without experimenting with an individual’s health.
