There is no way to indicate that infants might have birth defects or other health problems. Understanding common infant health conditions and ways to prevent them may decrease the risk of babies born with medical issues. Birth defects usually cannot be discovered until after birth. This is why it is so important for mothers’ to take into account that they need to take care of themselves while pregnant. In some occasions, people can discover infant’s medical conditions prenatally. In this case, doctors have resources and provide the appropriate care to have the best possible outcome to patients. Birth defects are defined as structural abnormalities, present at birth, with surgical, medical, or cosmetic importance. They can cause problems in overall health, how the body develops, or in how the body works. In the United States, 3% of the live births each year, approximately 120,000 infants, have identifiable structural birth defects. Issuing in 1.2 deaths per 1,000 live births, morbidity and mortality are known as the leading causes of infant mortality. Examples of birth defects are neural tube defects, orofacial defects, abdominal wall defects, and congenital heart defects. Generally, congenital heart defects are the most common birth defects, followed by musculoskeletal defects, genitourinary defects, orofacial defects, and neural tube defects (Simeone, et al., 2015).
