In the late 1700’s, the Industrial Revolution brought a wide variety of effects, both positive and negative, on the economic and industrial growth in society. There were many positive effects, such as faster and cheaper transportation, many job opportunities, new methods and inventions, a strong economy and capital, medical advances, etc. Unfortunately, there were an ample amount of negative effects as well. Things such as harsh working and living conditions, child labor which caused a deformity in many children’s bodies and health, diseases spread, air pollution, poor salaries, no health care, overcrowded cities, black lungs, and families not even getting to know each other. For children who began work at young ages there were many long term disadvantages and negative outcomes. “Many children who worked in the mines had long lasting health effects such as lung disease and stunted growth.” (Document B). In the 1800s there were few laws that limited the labor of young ones. These kids were forced to commit laborious jobs and the ending product in their lives was negative and all-in-all painful. “C: Did your deformity come upon you with much pain and weariness? B: Yes, I cannot express the pain all the time it was coming.” (Document 7) Elizabeth Bentley commenced her work at as early as six years old, and the laceration that had come upon her had been of great struggle. Unfortunately, injuries and health consequences were not egregious for adults who enforced child labor in their young days. Child labor not only had a short-term negative effect, but a long-term one as well. Children who worked had poor protection devices, their clothing was ripped, which could easily and quickly become dangerous, they were barefooted, and during the while, they were not getting educated (Document 8). These safety precautions were not being taken and that could lead to dangerous outcomes. They worked long hours and children cannot handle as many things as adults can.
