I would especially like to work with individuals affected by crisis, trauma, and grief, and help them overcome their personal and social problems that have, without a doubt, strong negative influences on their lives. Studying at Walden University is important to me, because this school will give me the knowledge and skills that I need to help people make the most of their own abilities, develop skills, and empower them to reach their goals. In the future, after gaining more knowledge and experience about mental health, I want to create mental health service agencies across the United States that will help the …show more content…
I learned how detrimental domestic violence, abuse, divorce, and substance abuse could be for a child. To further my knowledge about substance abuse, I did a research paper regarding the Drug Endangered Children (DEC) Program. Although this program was successful, in my interview with Mitchell Brown, the director of training for the DEC program, he stated that there are still many gaps and limitations that need to be addressed such as communication, teamwork, and collaboration. I hope to bridge this gap with the skills and knowledge obtained from Walden University. I want to provide intervention to drug endangered children, so they will have less of a traumatic experience when they are experiencing the change around them. Since graduating with my bachelor’s degree, I have been able to prove through my work history and professional development that I can balance a full-time work load and be a full-time student. After being accepted to the Master of Science in School Psychology program at National University, my record since starting graduate school has been one of continuous improvement. I did this by changing my negative perspectives into positive outlooks and changing my unhealthy lifestyle into a productive one. I kept a calendar and filled in my schedule for the week ahead. This gave me a clear idea of the days and times I could allocate to other …show more content…

Children coming from these families where parents abuse substances and are a high risk and need effective interventions to not follow the same path as their parents. It is very difficult to provide services specifically designed for children because they require a very unique style of intervention to help heal and recover from the affects their parents had caused for them (Lewis, Holmes, Watkins, & Mathers 2015). The programs that have been designed from children normally revolve around coping skills, interpersonal relationships, developing positive identity and self-esteem, and are normally done in a group setting to help strengthen relationships with peers and build a support system for like individuals. One program that has been found to improve social skills for girls and reduce feelings of social isolation in boys is the Betty Ford Children’s Program.
