Inclusion Principles In The Classroom

Upon recently conducting research for articles that support inclusion principles for special education students in classrooms I found an article entitled, “Supporting Students With Severe Disabilities in Inclusive Schools: A Descriptive Account From Schools Implementing Inclusive Practices.” Jennifer A. Kurth, Kristin J. Lyon, and Karrie A. Shogren and another titled “Regular primary schoolteachers’ attitudes towards inclusive education: a review of the literature” Anke de Boer . The first article is about the proper ways to implement inclusion principles into the classroom and what the positive and negative outcomes are from practicing this. They say that in order to have a chance at a successful inclusion classroom seven things need to be practiced. …show more content…
They give the key elements in how to successfully implement it and why it is successful. Recognizing the main point of this article is to focus on the positives and negatives, I still believe a weakness is the fact that there are no concrete numbers to back up the claims they are making. Although the claims are strong and clearly supported by the seven key steps it would be helpful and even more convincing if there were numbers to support the claims. The numbers would make the evidence clearer and more substantial. A strength of this article is the fact that the authors intentionally introduce the weaknesses along with the strengths. Although the authors are advocating for inclusion and discussing the proper way to use it in a classroom, they still bring up the negatives of inclusion practice for children with special education needs. Because the authors bring up the negatives of the article it shows that they are recognizing their methods are not perfect and there is always room for improvement. It adds depth to their article because it shows understanding that there are more than one side to the results and

    Although, I do agree that there are merits to full inclusion, I do not believe that it is the right choice for every child with a disability. There cannot be one rule that applies to all students with disabilities, which range from severely mentally handicapped to mild cases of ADHD. I agree with Kauffman, McGee and Brigham ’s assertion (2008) that the goals of full inclusion are more for the perception of normalization with a disregard of expected proficiency.
