Organizational Assessment This assignment will address the use of evidence based practice in a hospital in the metro area. Using assessment tools provided by the instructor, it is the goal of this assignment to look for areas of improvement in implementing evidence based practice by interviewing leaders and staff within the organization. Four staff nurses and two middle management individuals were surveyed. The staff nurse surveys are given more credence as to how well evidence-based practice is implemented or received at the basic care level. However, management level responses only show how evidence-based practice is believed to be perceived at the bedside. All responses to the survey were rated lower or equal by staff nurses to management level responses. Overview A brief description of the facility is needed to help see how processes develop within the hospital. The institution states that its mission is committed to the care and improvement of human life, above all else. The institution has a vision to be the premier healthcare destination for everyone. The hospital has a value system based the ICARE mnemonic. ICARE stands for integrity, compassion, always, respect, and excellence. Nurses and employees are encouraged to help bring the vision, mission, and values to fruition. The vision of the hospital is reached by the nurses and employees using the value system in how they treat patients and each other. The institution places a high priority on ethical standards and quality of care. The hospital believes that everything should always be done the same time, to everyone, regardless of who they are, while giving compassion in every area of service. Evidence-based practiced would work well in this system. Mutual respect is encouraged between staff members from leadership downward. As each of the values is implemented, a culture of excellence is attained and the mission is achieved in being the premier healthcare destination. To meet these goals, evidence-based practices should be at the forefront of all patient care. While doing the interview, the interviewee was also given a chance to voice concerns while answering the questions. Examples were often given to support the answer on the questionnaire. Summary of Categories Leadership Staff nurses thought that leadership has just started the process of discussing evidence-based practices (EBP), but management believes it has clearly communicated the value of EBP’s. …show more content…
Likewise, staff nurses felt that management sometimes discusses the future of the organization and EBP’s. Management has the position that it is always open to suggestions on how to improve process or outcomes. Lastly, the difference between leadership and staff is how EBP is promoted. Management sees EBP as an improvement to services, but staff see EBP as required for certain funding.
Organizational Culture Organizational culture plays a major role in how well EBP is implemented. There are some similarities in how management and staff see implementation. Concurrently, both staff and management see there is room to improve the outcomes for patients. Staff members are willing to make necessary changes to make the patient’s more successful. Management sees staff as unwilling to make changes in work related tasks, but willing to help the patient outcome. Workshop and extra training is sometimes attended by both. Yet, both are eager to learn more about new methods to bring excellent care through guidelines. It is felt by staff nurse and management that change will not happen, unless beneficial to clients or nurses. Lastly is understood by both parties that EBP’s are not fully understood and are willing to learn to about the benefits. Management believes that EBP are important, but take time to learn and worth the time. Management see staff as basically prepared for EBP implementation. Staff sees that EBP implementation is in the learning phase. Data Collection Individual service plans for patients is strongly encourage by management, but staff only see the gathering of information, as way to provide for billing.
