Stetler's Model Of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)

Improved Essays
There are various evidence-based practice (EBP) models that are most commonly used in the field of nursing. These EBP models include Funk’s Model of Research Dissemination, Stetler’s Model of Research Utilization and Evidence-Based Practice, DiCenso et al. Model, The Iowa Model, Rosswurm and Larrabee Model, The ARCC Model, and Kitson’s Framework. The similarity across the Stetler’s, DiCenso et al., Iowa, and Rosswurm and Larrabee Model is that the basic steps or phases involved in the model is same. For instance: the first step in these models involves the identification of the problem in a clinical practice; next step is to conduct literature search, gather evidences from research, and compare it to current practice; then the decision is made

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is incorporated throughout the health care field to improve patient care and organizational outcomes. The implementation of EBP relies on the infrastructure and culture of a facility. It is the job of the nurse manager to promote a culture in the facility that allows staff the ability to accept change and grow. The purpose of this discussion is to discuss how an organizational infrastructure and culture plays a part in implementing EBP. I will also be discussing my facilities process in implementing EBP.…

For evidence-base practice to be implemented there are many variables at play. First, the nurse leader needs to promote evidence-base practice by creating a positive culture, encouraging discussion at routine meetings, giving nurses the freedom to question how to do things differently, support staff in implementation by giving direction, and designating money in the budget and time for it. Plus, nurse leaders have the duty to verbalize the association of using evidence-base practice and achieving the organization’s mission with those throughout the organization (Huber,…

Thus far we have learned a great deal about the development and implementation of the evidence based practice (EBP) guidelines, now the next important step would be how to effectively apply the EBP to clinical practice. According to Field and Lohr (1990), "Clinical practice guidelines are systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and patient decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances." (p. 38). What I liked most about this statement and would like to place emphasis on is “assist…patient decisions about appropriate health care for clinical circumstances” (p.38). Not only is educating the patient about the most recent data on caring for them is essential but how you deliver the message to the…

According to LoBiondo-Wood and Haber (2014), the situation specific theories “are narrow in scope, explain a small aspect of phenomena and processes of interest to nurses, and are usually limited to specific populations or field of practice (p. 82). The research and practice are closely connected in the situation-specific theory. In addition, I think that it would be appropriate to apply a broader framework to this presented article such as the Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services Framework (PARIHS). The theory of the PARIHS framework is that the success of evidence implementation depends on three necessary elements: evidence, context, and facilitation. Ullrich, Sahay, and Stetler (2014) stated that “successful implementation is most likely to occur when (a) scientific evidence is viewed as aligning with professional and patient beliefs, (b) healthcare context is receptive to implementation, including supportive leadership, culture and evaluation systems, and (c) mechanisms are in place to facilitate implementation” (p.…

As you stated the advanced practice nurse (APN) must center care on evidence based practice. Implementation of best practices consists of the APN assessing and planning care based on best practices and with the knowledge of cultural values and beliefs. The understanding and use of evidence based practice is considered a core competency of the APN and further defines the professional role (Butler, 2011). Development of this competency promotes positive patient outcomes. While evidence based practice has proven to produce improved patient outcomes, reduced health care cost and improved clinical patient satisfaction, it is calculated its use is 55% (Vincent, Hastings-Tolsma, Gephart & Alfonzo, 2015).…

There are multiple ways that a nurse can look up and utilize evidence-based practice in our everyday tasks. One way that the facility that I work at does is through a system called Health Stream. It is how the facility keeps the staff up to date on all the new policies and procedures and all the new information about diseases. It is a place where a nurse can take online classes to further his or her knowledge. There is also a website that the hospital pays for a subscription to that is called UpToDate.…

This essay will evaluate the evidence base for the importance of patient nutrition within adult nursing. As stated within the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) code (2015) nurses must “deliver the fundamentals of care effectively”. This refers to the integral components of nursing, for instance nutrition and hydration, being monitored and kept to adequate levels as it can improve a patient’s overall recovery, as discussed by Brady, McCabe and McCann (2013). This essay will cover the methods used to assess and maintain nutrition, the importance of nutrition and the consequences of malnutrition. Evidence-based practice involves the use of the best evidence available to “justify the rationales for practice” as stated by Dougherty, Lister and…

It is combined with clinical judgments and patient’ preferences to obtain an outcome which is the best quality cost -effectiveness of patient care. It is not only important for nurses to know the right thing to do but also to know why it is the right thing to do. For example some nurses know that a particular method must be implemented but ignore the scientific reasoning behind it, which means they don’t know what research support the method. First, nursing has always used research findings to support data collection, to suggest interventions and evaluate the quality and growth of patient care. This method is called research utilization (Spector, 2008). In research utilization, the different results from the studies are conveniently selected for the application in nursing practice. For evidence based research, the nurses will select the best evidence from the research, the results are analysed, synthesized and then integrated into practice (Spector, 2008, p.…
