Future Nurse Practitioner

Improved Essays
The healthcare system as a whole is a complex machine that I, as a future nurse practitioner, will have to navigate and carefully operate. It is a collage of several networks, including, consumers, providers, insurance companies, and the government; working together towards the ever elusive goal of cohesion. As a future nurse practitioner my role in this system is to understand the workings of this system and work within its confines to promote the best outcome for my patients. In addition, in order to be effective as a nurse practitioner, emphasis must also be placed on evidence based practice. Research is essential to healthcare and as a provider I must provide care based on best practice and evidence based practice. The Affordable Care

Determining the strength of a nursing research study is a critical process that enhances the implementation of evidence-based practice. Determining the strength of a nursing research study ensures that the empirical knowledge developed through nursing research is useful in improving nursing care, the system of healthcare delivery, and patient outcomes. Additionally, nurses should use research findings when making clinical decisions on the best practice to use in order to deliver healthcare services that ensure all the patients receive safe and quality care (Melnyk et al. 2014). Therefore, determining the strength of a nursing research study helps to ensure the evidence is credible (valid and reliable) and is appropriate if incorporated into clinical practice.…

The role of Nurse Practitioner (NP) is among the four recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse roles. NPs are independent practitioners with prescriptive privileges, and are found in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, family and specialty practices, as well as in nursing homes. Additionally, and importantly, in these times of corporate driven medicine, NP’s can bill and be reimbursed for services rendered (McClelland, 2014). The four concepts of the nursing metaparadigm; health, person, environment, and nursing practice, overlap and combine to form the foundation for nursing knowledge, theory and practice at all levels including the advanced clinical practice level (Bender & Feldman, 2015).…

Factors that are motivating the adoption of evidence-based practice by APN’s This day and age patients are an informed patient who have researched their symptoms, medicines and potential procedures. The APN must be knowledgeable of what is best practice and be prepared to have these conversations with the well informed patient. Just as the patient can become an informed advocate, they can also become the misinformed advocate. Evidence- based practice allows the APN a unique position to impart best practice research concerning treatment, diagnostic and even preventative education to the patient.…

On the other hand, evidence-based practice is about utilizing that evidence and applying in clinical decision making(Conner, 2014). This evidence comes from research. The purpose of evidence-based practice is to use the best available evidence when making patient-care decisions. In other words, when we encounter certain situations when providing care to our patients, there will be several different ways of solving the problem; as nurses, we must use to best one to arrive at the best possible outcomes. One important distinction between research and evidence-based practice is that evidence-based practice takes into account the patient 's preferences for interventions(Fitzpatrick, 2016).…

Evidence based practice is so important in the current healthcare world. When evidence based practice is at the center of any organization, there is great improvement in practice and patient outcome. “Only 55% of the time, patients get the evidence-based practice needed for their plan of treatment (IOM 2001). The institute for healthcare improvement, launched 100,000 Lives Campaign enrolled more than 3,000 hospitals, representing an estimated 75 percent of U.S. hospitals beds, which implemented up to six evidence-based and life-saving interventions. In eighteen months, the campaign prevented an estimated 122,300 deaths through the implementation of these six evidence-based practices across the country.”…

As you stated the advanced practice nurse (APN) must center care on evidence based practice. Implementation of best practices consists of the APN assessing and planning care based on best practices and with the knowledge of cultural values and beliefs. The understanding and use of evidence based practice is considered a core competency of the APN and further defines the professional role (Butler, 2011). Development of this competency promotes positive patient outcomes. While evidence based practice has proven to produce improved patient outcomes, reduced health care cost and improved clinical patient satisfaction, it is calculated its use is 55% (Vincent, Hastings-Tolsma, Gephart & Alfonzo, 2015).…

Good Evening Steve, Great post! I agree that nursing practice cannot be limited to past experiences and traditions anymore. With limited resources and rising cost of healthcare, finding ways to improve safety, efficacy, and quality of patient care while reducing cost is of utmost importance. Incorporating evidence-based practice (EBP) allows each nurse an opportunity to use their skills in scientific inquiry. A patient centered care necessitates nurses to question current practices that are not working or are not as safe, efficient, or cost-effective for the patient.…

Evidence-based practice is important to clinicians when providing care but how do we know that the evidence used to manage our practices is validated and will provide the quality we seek? How does one determine if the information available is truly best practices and evidence-based? When searching for information regarding a certain subject, one must be able to sift through the mountain of data and conclude if the report given by the research is true and valid. Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2015) emphasize that critical appraisal of the evidence is crucial when applying evidence-based practice (p. 13), the authors include a checklist for qualitative evidence (p. 548-549). To provide a rapid critical appraisal for the article, Youth…
