Determining the strength of a nursing research study is a critical process that enhances the implementation of evidence-based practice. Determining the strength of a nursing research study ensures that the empirical knowledge developed through nursing research is useful in improving nursing care, the system of healthcare delivery, and patient outcomes. Additionally, nurses should use research findings when making clinical decisions on the best practice to use in order to deliver healthcare services that ensure all the patients receive safe and quality care (Melnyk et al. 2014). Therefore, determining the strength of a nursing research study helps to ensure the evidence is credible (valid and reliable) and is appropriate if incorporated into clinical practice.…

Factors that are motivating the adoption of evidence-based practice by APN’s This day and age patients are an informed patient who have researched their symptoms, medicines and potential procedures. The APN must be knowledgeable of what is best practice and be prepared to have these conversations with the well informed patient. Just as the patient can become an informed advocate, they can also become the misinformed advocate. Evidence- based practice allows the APN a unique position to impart best practice research concerning treatment, diagnostic and even preventative education to the patient.…

The purpose of evidence-based practice is to use the best available evidence when making patient-care decisions. In other words, when we encounter certain situations when providing care to our patients, there will be several different ways of solving the problem; as nurses, we must use to best one to arrive at the best possible outcomes. Different experiments must be performed in order to achieve the best evidence of a theory. Therefore, it is important for nurses to update their knowledge by always informing themselves about any current new researches.…

Incorporating evidence-based practice (EBP) allows each nurse an opportunity to use their skills in scientific inquiry. A patient centered care necessitates nurses to question current practices that are not working or are not as safe, efficient, or cost-effective for the patient.…

Evidence-based practice is important to clinicians when providing care but how do we know that the evidence used to manage our practices is validated and will provide the quality we seek? How does one determine if the information available is truly best practices and evidence-based? When searching for information regarding a certain subject, one must be able to sift through the mountain of data and conclude if the report given by the research is true and valid. Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2015) emphasize that critical appraisal of the evidence is crucial when applying evidence-based practice (p. 13), the authors include a checklist for qualitative evidence (p. 548-549).
