I have spent my fair share of time around physical therapy. Between having a younger sister who suffered from an inoperable brain tumor, to just being a downright clumsy child, my family has had plenty of experience in the healthcare field. When I was younger, physical therapy was my favorite place to go. I was allowed play games with my sister and do fun things such as playing “Follow the Leader” and “Simon Says”. What I did not realize at that time was all of the hard work that it takes to become a Doctor of Physical Therapy. When I began my undergraduate degree in health science, I truly learned the important characteristics that make someone a quality healthcare provider. The core of my education began with learning the four core competencies of healthcare: values and ethics, responsibilities of different roles, interprofessional collaboration, and teamwork collaboration. I was taught the structures of interprofessional education and communication, and how every healthcare professional who comes in to contact with a patient plays a major role in their overall care. I believe that these core characteristics are what create a professional in a healthcare setting. My undergraduate education has prepared me to one day be a professional by instilling in me the important qualities of professionalism.
