The Importance Of Pedagogy In Physical Therapy

Academic teaching in Physical Therapy is one of the various career that a Physical Therapy graduate can pursue. However, holding a bachelor's degree in this field wouldn't suffice in aiming to be a successful professional educator. A Physical Therapy educator must be versed in the pedagogy in academic teaching. Pedagogy is defined by Westbrook et al. (2013) as stated by Watkins and Mortimore (1999) as "any conscious activity by one person designed to enhance learning in another". Therefore, pedagogy is the art or way of teaching by an educator to improve student learning. Furthermore, according to the study by May (1983) majority of the respondents in their study consider teaching or pedagogy as an important skill that a physical therapist must have. Also, a number of respondents (30 %) worked as a teacher for Physical Therapy students. However, majority of Physical Therapist respondents didn't have knowledge or experience about teaching pedagogy learned in their preparation for the said medical field. Results of the study seemed to point this out to the lack of training on pedagogy in academic teaching in their Physical Therapy education program and majority of respondents learned to teach through trial and error. With this evidence, we can assume that pedagogy in academic teaching in Physical Therapy is an important skill, especially, for those who aspires a role as a Physical Therapy educator.
