Katniss Dystopian Environment

Katniss was just an upshot of her dystopian environment. Though she is just a teenager she become the product of caretaker in her family and also takes up much responsibility for keeping them fed. She often gets food from forage and hunting because of this she never had qualms about killing animals. She seemed to be desensitized because of this constant exposure of death. This attitude is seen in her willingness to draw her sister’s cat Buttercup when it came to them for the first time. The appearances of it were made at the times whenever she talks about the human death and sufferings which she witnessed in her life as she sees the starvation of the people and also in the televised Hunger Games. While describing these scenes she seemed to be unemotional though she presents only the facts without elaborating it with her own feelings about them. She was horrible by all these things but at the same time it was not shocking. It seemed to be the part of her environment rather than abnormalities. The family relationship of Katniss was also very much obvious that she took all the responsibilities for keeping her family fed all the time. In order to feed her family, she used the skills of foraging and hunting which was taught by her father. Because of this position she was endued with the most valuable survival skills that helped her later at the time of Hunger Games. Gale had even pointed out that hunting human was similar to that of hunting the animals. The memory of Katniss’s encounter with Peeta was also significant that creates a conflict within Katniss that was dealt by her later. She also credited Peeta who gave her the two loaves of bread earlier which made her to restore hope after the death of her father. She felt that this act was weighty unless her family may have starved. She tried and connected her survival of that difficult period with Peeta and his aberrant act of kindness. The irony presented for the situation is that she might have been made to kill the boy who helped her to keep her alive as only one person could survive in the Hunger Games. She hoped that someone else may kill him first which she thinks that she may not be able to kill him when the situation arises. The theme of suffering as amusement was focused to be one of the main themes which were established by Collins in the very beginning of the novel. As we learnt that Hunger Games are a televised contest in which the children fight with one another to the death that are all watched by the people of Panem. The foremost attraction that drew the people towards Hunger Games is that it is an actual real life suffering that has been experienced by the tributes. These ways of playing Hunger Games recollects the Gladiator games of ancient Rome but are the essentially exaggerated version of reality television in dystopian ambience. Even though they are not similar to the reality television shows, the government has managed to mandate them. It was also made quite clear that the residents of district 12 who were likely to that of the poor district viewed these as a form of oppression. The government of Panem wanted all the poor districts under the control of it to get the remembrance of their defeat and powerlessness and for this ultimate cause the Hunger Games had been setup.
