Zak W. Van once said, “Bullying builds character like nuclear waste creates superheroes. It 's a rare occurrence and often does much more damage than endowment.” When I was younger, I was always bullied because I walked different from everyone else. Being bullied always made me want to be someone better than those who’d bully me and make a difference. I knew that I wasn’t really what they were calling me. Words such as retarded or a dumb crippled were not words that defined me at all; I was actually very intelligent. At the time, I used to think that I would have a career working with young children who were disabled. As I grew older, that interest lessened and I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I also learned to ignore those who’d bully me and focus on my education instead. By the time I was in high school, I found an interest in psychology and began learning about how the mind worked. Learning about how the mind worked gave me a glimpse of why people do things such as bullying. This gave me hope. Knowing that I still wanted to be able to make a difference, I looked up different careers that would allow me to use psychology and allow me to help people. I came across the study of criminology and found it very interesting to be able to go into the mind of a criminal and found out why they do the things that they do. My decision to study criminology reflects my identity in two ways: it gives me the ability to help others and it allows me to use my brain. My mother used to…
