The video uses ethos when explaining the qualifications of the detectives. For example, Detective Mark Kennedy is a 26 year veteran and Detective Clinton Givens, who has been with NOPD for 17 years. They both push to get confessions from both suspects by using an accusatory tone while harshly interrogating them-showing us evidence that persuades the viewers to believe that they are the killers. In the case of, “Third Man,” the detectives interview Terry F. Jackson at the scene of the crime before he goes to the hospital. During the interview the detectives have an accusatory and firm tone. They ask Terry a series of questions which Terry cannot answer because he was so drunk the night before he has no idea what happened. Detective Kennedy says to Terry, “You know what happened in there. Or, maybe you’re the suspect. I don’t know” (“Third man…,” 2016, 00:05). So they are slightly accusing and unpleasant. The detectives let Terry go and are off to interview around the area. The detectives then find clues that could mean another victim, Joseph Brown. They cannot find Joe at his apartment. In “Third Man” detectives believe that Joseph’s motive was to rob Omar. They believe he did not mean to kill him but his anger got the better of him since he was drunk. The alcohol intake may have blinded Josephs reality of the situation. He claimed self-defense as reason to why he killed Omar which we learned about these in Criminal Justice as justification defenses. Though under the alcohol’s spell Joseph managed to escape and throw out evidence that may have linked him to anything. The claim made that he acted in fear due to previous events that happened to him where he was robbed and pistol whipped; the intent was still questioned. With an eye witness that was fallible, the criteria that took place in the altercation if unclear to authorities. They believe his mens rea was an intent to harm but ended up escalating them.
