For this assignment, I decided to work off a subject that truly “strums” a string in my heart,
which is racism, particularly the “Stop and Frisk” law which has arised in New York. This unfair
law has been in my subconscious, as it strikes me as both illogical, and quite offensive to
minorities. While the law aims to create “safety”, as well as eliminate criminal activity, it truly
offends those who are suspected of crime, especially when a large sum of those people
randomly happen to be POC. And, according to NYPD’s reports, 9 out of 10 of the chosen
suspects are innocent. These people are pulled simply because they have a certain “look”, and

I attempted to utilize Ethos in a couple of ways, starting by stating my position, and that I was
an officer in the NYPD. Throughout this piece, “we” is repeatedly used, proving “credibility” to
those reading. At a certain point, the phrase “We promise our crew will always keep you safe.
We will fight, and Destroy!” is stated, which attempts to prove to readers that the NYPD truly will
do such, proving that the narrator is most certainly “reliable”, and will promise to do such heinous
actions!
In addition to utilizing Ethos, I aimed to use Pathos in this piece in many ways. While the piece
comes off as a comical piece, the story behind it encompasses a deeper message, which can
affect those reading to feel pity towards those offended by the “Stop and Frisk” tactic. In the pros
section about this practice, it is sarcastically stated that S&F only “against minorities”. While that
may be considered humorous, it aims to reach out to the heart of the viewers and insist that this
truly affects minorities!
