Persuasive Essay: Should Homework Be Spent In School?

Not a day goes by when I don’t hear my classmates, including myself, complain about the amount of homework that we receive. In response to the protests my teachers will often say that we’re supposed to spend two hours on homework for every hour spent in class, so we shouldn’t be surprised. If we were to follow that line of reasoning, we would end up spending twelve hours on homework a day, which is completely unrealistic; even spending half of that on homework is insane for one day. Although teachers are correct in saying that homework is a great learning tool, it only overwhelms students when assigned in excess--making it difficult to complete. Students could take advantage of the newfound time to relieve any stress through physical exertion for example: jogging, swimming, yoga and dancing; all things that we don’t have time to do when we’re tied to a chair for six hours doing homework. Homework aside, being in school for six hours straight with only a lunch break is tough, which is why in my ideal school there would be a “relaxation room” dedicated to stress relief using a variety of activities that students could choose from. This wouldn’t be a scheduled class because stress doesn’t get scheduled, so students could go to this classroom whenever they feel like they can’t concentrate or think, are having a bad day, or just need a break; they could even take a 15-minute (power) nap if needed. A lot of people in my high school take “mental days” because their brain just needs a rest.
