In 1919 Conrad N. Hilton bought the Mobley, a hotel in Cisco, Texas. Over the next few years, he bought other Texas hotels. While business was strong, Mr. Hilton has greater ambitions. In 1925 he opened the first hotel to carry his name it was the Dallas Hilton. In 1943 with the purchase of the Roosevelt and Plaza hotels in New York City, Conrad Hilton became the first hotelier to have hotels from coast to coast in the United States. With his great success driving him on in 1946 The Hilton Hotels Corporation was formed and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Conrad N. Hilton was born on December 25, 1887 in San Antonio, New Mexico. Mr. Hilton was the son of a local businessman his father owned a general store. While growing up, he attended 2 military schools Goss Military Institute and Mexico Military Institute. He also attended college at St. Michael 's College. He worked in many fields as a clerk, a trader, and a speculator all by the age of 18. In 1907 his family fell on hard times and his father converted part of the store into a hotel. This was young Conrad’s first experience with a hotel. In 1912 Conrad Hilton was elected to the first New Mexico state legislature, where he served for 2 terms. He was a well-rounded young man and like many his age in when World War I in 1912 started he enlisted as a lieutenant in the army and served his country. After his discharge in 1919 is when it all started and he purchased his first hotel in Texas. He had great success in buying or building a new hotel almost every year. He suffered during the great depression, but he even with the financial losses he sustained he was able to start again and recover.
