Holmes was born to a affluent family and was very privileged. He was bullied as a child which had a big impact on him. The boys who bullied him once forced him into the doctor's office where he came face to face with a skeleton. Holmes had stated this: “It was a wicked and dangerous thing to do to a child of tender years and health.” He later admitted that what had happened had cured his fears. As he grew into adulthood he found a interest in medicine which lead to him practicing surgery on animals. He graduated from Michigan University and moved to Chicago to work in the field of pharmaceuticals. Holmes also pursued real estate and promotional deals using the name H. H. The construction of the hotel began around the time of the World’s Fair during 1893. To make sure his attentions for the hotel were secret he hired several different contractors to complete the hotels construction. If he suspected that one of the contractors had seen too much he would fire them on the spot.
The blueprint included 51 doorways that opened to brick walls, 100 windowless rooms, stairs that led to nowhere, two furnaces, and body sized chutes to an incinerator. On the first floor it contained a drug store where people purchased tonics and medicines from almost everyday. The upper floors contained his living quarters and many small chambers that he used to torture victims. Many of these rooms had gas jets so he could asphyxiate or deprive the air from his victims. They also were soundproofed walls. There were also trapdoors and chutes that lead to the basements. He would send the bodies down and burn them or dispose of them in different ways. Holmes was a pseudomosaicist which is where he would lock himself up with his victims and watch them suffer. Women were more targeted by Holmes then men. Since Holmes was a medical student he had many different connections to sell his victims skeletons. Holmes and sometimes a hired assistant, would strip the flesh of the bodies and dissect them to prepare the bodies to be
