Health promotion is defined as activities directed toward increasing the level of well-being and actualizing the health potential of people, families, community and the society. The Unites States health care system remains disease oriented, despite increased efforts toward health promotion and fitness. With its goal of curing and controlling illness, the United States spends more on healthcare than all other nations. Health promotion, disease prevention, and health education efforts mainly address illness prevention. It was in the 1990s, that America started recognizing the need to promote health, and that was when the federal government initiated Healthy People 2000. In 2000, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued its Healthy People 2010 report, which described national objectives for health promotion and disease prevention, including increase quality and years of healthy life and eliminate health disparities. In 2011, the federal government completed work on Healthy People 2020, a collaborative process among the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, other federal agencies, members of the public, and an advisory committee. Healthy People 2020 envisions a society in which all citizens can a live long and healthy live. New features in Healthy People 2020 include increased emphasis on health equity that considers the social determinants of health, increased attention to health promotion across the life span, and an interactive website that permits…
