March 29, 2009 was the day when I first stepped in the Islands of Hawaii. While looking around the airport, there was one thing in my mind. “Is Hawaii really a paradise?” Throughout my stay here, I discovered the answer to this question.

While going towards our gate number, I saw hula dancers dancing passionately, and giving happiness to passengers who see them. When we arrived in Maui, my uncle and grandfather gave me leis. Everyone gave me a warm welcome. Whenever my father introduced me to a person he knew, he/ she welcomed me. I felt like a celebrity on my first day here. I didn’t know what to do when I first went to school as a high school freshmen. I was confused and scared. Everyone knew what they were doing. I felt lost. While searching

In order to give back to our school library, I became a volunteer at our Library’s Book Fair. In addition, I also volunteered at Makawao’s Public Library. I arranged books, and helped the librarian come up with activities for the children. During my first semester in college, we assisted the elders at a nursing home as part of our Nursing Assistant class. Because of that class, I got a chance to help the elders with their needs. That experience is the reason why I want to become a nurse. I want to help other people with their needs. The elders motivated me to pursue my dreams. During Fall 2014, I joined our school’s Kabatak Club. We volunteered at the Maui Fil-Am Festival. We assisted children on making star lanterns. On Fall 2015, I joined our school’s Circle K Club. We volunteered at a booth during the 93rd Maui Fair. I love the feeling I get after helping other people. It is indescribable.

I am now halfway on fulfilling what I started to build when I first came to Hawaii. This is now my third year in college. I am going to graduate my Liberal Arts degree this semester. I am also finished with all of my prerequisites for the Nursing Program. I am currently waiting for the results of my application for the program. I am going to strive to reach my dream of being a nurse. I want to know everything that I can in order to be a great

These Hawaiian Islands have been inhabited for centuries before the first ships sailed across the Pacific. Hawaiian Islands have been shrouded in mystery since their history had been passed along vocally for centuries. Hawaiian culture hasn’t changed drastically ever since they inhabited the islands, until European and American explorers discovered the islands. This pair interested me the most because both nations have two completely different identities, but the Hawaiian Islands later become part of the United States. These nations have completely different history, religion, clothing, culture, and many more.…

5 Things you may not know about Maui. 1. The beautiful island of Maui is named after the legendary Polynesian Demi God Maui. For five years, I went to the Boys and Girls Club during the summer, and once a week we would visit the retirement homes to play bingo and conversate with the elderly residents. Unlike many of the other kids, I was more fascinated with watching the interaction between the nurses and their patients rather than playing games. I watched as the nurses would walk over to patients, adjust their blankets, and pillows as they showed so much compassion. I remember that day so vividly watching the nurses care for others so generously as if it was first nature and I looked at them with the utmost respect. Since that day, I have aspired to be a nurse and to care for others because, at the end of the day, that could be me, or a loved one, you never know…

I volunteered in the recovery room of a hospital for 6 months earlier this year. I was primarily shadowing the nurses as they prepared the patients for transition to the regular rooms. `I also took down results, helped patients get food/drug items they needed, help transport them around the hospital and provided general support to the nursing staff. This was my first experience with volunteering, and it showed me how beneficial it is to not think about myself but help others, while becoming more immersed in my chosen field. On the other hand, it also made me realize that it would be more rewarding to volunteer in a setting with even less available…

Hawaiian Serenity One summer years ago, about 2005, my family went on vacation to Hawaii which took all of two weeks during the month of July. We were all badly sunburnt from the strong Hawaiian sun, using bottles and bottles of aloe to soothe our burned skin. The rough ocean water left our eyes and ears waterlogged for days. However, other than these two setbacks, the vacation was a complete success. Every few years since then, we return as a family during the month of July for about two weeks.…

I was expecting for Hawaii and the plantation to be an easy way to make a fortune and live in a good environment. Sadly, my expectations were not met as we were paid 16$ per month which was totally unfair. Also the housing they provided was uncomfortable because the houses were old and had no lights. We also worked long and hard 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. Our work was to plant, plough, and load the sugarcane.…
