It enables different viewpoints to be presented to the group in regards to the task, and it allows for the clear communication of ideas and feelings between group members (Johnson & Johnson 2009, p. 25). Listening is a four-step process which begins with perceiving a message, interpreting it, choosing what it means, and then responding to it (Adams and Galanes 2009). Hence, listening is a critical component of communication, as it allows the communication to exist in two dimensions. Johnson & Johnson (2009, p. 26) state that communication within effective groups is two-way, where the open and accurate expression of both ideas and feelings are emphasised.
