Introduction Group work and collaboration is an opportunity for every nurse to expand his/her resources to make greater impacts in the community. The final project of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at the University of Washington, Tacoma, involved partnering with the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department (TPCHD) and the Medical Reserve Corp (MRC). This project and partnership provided an opportunity to collaborate with individuals, groups and public health organizations to address a need in the community. These check-ins provided an opportunity for the individual group members to open up and share which helped build relationships amongst the group members. Sharing personal information conveys trust and respect for the group members which is essential for optimal group functioning (Adler, Rosenfeld, & Proctor II, 2013). All group members were respectful of one another in each meeting and listened attentively while others were speaking. Each group member was respectful of everyone’s time, showing up to meetings on time and coming prepared to discuss the events of the previous weeks surveying. If someone was going to be late they notified their partner so that they could notify the group. These are traits identified by Connery and Vohs (2006), that good, functional groups demonstrate and evidence of norming. …show more content…
The group member who had written this section had to leave the meeting early on because they were unwell. When we reached that group member’s section of the paper, it was too long and restated everything that had already been addressed in the body of the paper. We proceeded to revise this section without the presence of the group member who had comprised the section due to time constraints. Some group members voiced their discomfort with revising a group members section without that group member present, especially since it was necessary to revise much of what this person had written for the conclusion. The missing group member verbalized to me, prior to leaving class, that we should revise her section as needed as they were unable to return by the conclusion of the meeting. Myself and another group member agreed to update the missing group member on the necessary changes and assist with any modifications of the conclusion if the group member had questions or
