1. Using resources, regulation and reputation as a basis, what are the sources of pressure on firms such as Frito-lay to reduce their environmental footprint?
The effect of industrialization and the increasing population of humanity are the reasons why natural resources are being overly consumed, outstripping the resource base on an unprecedented scale. The use of resources and subsequently a reduction in operational costs is the primary reason why several companies are going into environmental footprint reduction. Sprint has set an ambitious goal for 90% of its suppliers to be in compliance with its environmental standards by 2017. Some of these standards include an absolute greenhouse gas emission reduction. The company’s energy management program has resulted in reducing energy use by an average of more than nine percent each year for over six years. Sprint’s energy reduction in 2008 equates to 21,400 tons of CO2, or: Taking 3,918 passenger cars off the road for one year. Reducing oil use by 49,744 barrels per year. Saving the electricity used in 2,967 households each year. Preserving 149 acres of forest.
Sprint and Fit-lays initiatives are similar in that both companies have drastic measures for environmental sustainability. Sprint however is not only focused on the company alone. It environmental strategies even affects its suppliers, which in turn creates exponential benefits for the environment.
