It was 5am in San Marcos de Colon, Honduras and we woke up to the sound of the rooster crowing. Kayla, my roommate, and I decided to head down to the courtyard, where the kitchen is to see if Gina had started the coffee. As we walked down the stairs, we saw our principal, Brother Davis, was writing down out itinerary for the day. We headed straight for the delicious soul-warming coffee. As we enjoyed our coffee, Kayla and I watched as our fellow classmates started to wake up. Every few minutes one would walk slowly down the stairs and into the courtyard and have a seat. After about an hour, all 25 students and 5 adults were in the courtyard waiting for breakfast to start. As we waited, Brother Davis gave us a brief overview of our day. He told us we would be going to a town where no Americans have been before. It was the town of Duyure and it would take us about an hour and a half to get there. My classmates and I ate our breakfast, packed our backpacks, and met Brother Davis and our bus driver, Mario, outside in front of the compound. Mario needed the school bus that day for his church, so all 30 of us climbed into the back of a very small flatbed truck. I was sitting on top of my bag with my legs on top of Grace and my back against Justin’s legs. About an hour into the ride we stopped at Jesús de Nazareth Iglesia Bautista for a bathroom break.
