Personal Narrative: The Big Day

Improved Essays
I woke up to my alarm going off at around 7:30 to the smell of eggs and bacon as my mom was cooking me breakfast. She never does this for me, but she knew today was the big day. It was the first JV golf tournament of the year. I have been waiting all school year for this special day as me and my buddies go out and just destroy the other JV golf teams. I did not even want to go to school today as I had to focus on not hitting the ball out of bounds on every hit. See I am not the greatest golfer in the world, but I am the greatest JV golfer. So my mom gives me my eggs and bacon and massages my shoulders as she gets me all loosened up for the day. All day at school I just felt like I had to throw up because I was so nervous, and of course I had

Jeffrey Archer once said “There are defining moments in one’s life when you learn about yourself, and you deposit that knowledge in the experience account, so you draw on it at some later date.” The real kicker about this is you never know what those defining moments are until much later. Then when you draw on those moments they become worthwhile as much as they might have honestly sucked at the time. I number these defining moments with the brightly colored numbered moving stickers the movers put on boxes and furniture before loading them onto the moving truck. Before the age on ten, I live in four different states and six different houses.…

My Awakening began with a visit to the Missouri Zen Center in Webster Groves. I have a family connection to Zen Buddhism through my niece and nephew. This piqued my curiosity of what it was like inside a temple or center for Buddhism. I made the decision before going that I would follow Eihei Dogan’s quote and “To forget the self is to be awakened by all things” this way I would have a clear mind of my experience. The center is in a tranquil setting in a Victorian house tucked up a hill surrounded by aged trees.…

A New Home Walking, away from everything you once knew and starting over is never a picnic. Leaving, Iraq and moving to America has impacted my life more than anything. I was only 4 years old at that time, the only English I spoke was “excuse me, water please.” We did not know it then, but our lives were going to change, we would become “Americanized”. Learning English was one of the massive changes that occurred, the way I dressed (culture), even the way I have power to go to school and educate myself, and to have my own view on life.…

These performances are a great opportunity for students to share a narrative about a significant life event. I am planning on doing a story about what happened while I was volunteering in Keokee, Virginia. While volunteering I came across a puppy who was in very bad shape and needed immediate medical care. This was a situation where I realized not only did I care dearly about the people I was trying to help but also this dog who had found itself in a very unfortunate situation. This was a significant event which led me to realize that when I truly care about something I am not willing to give up on it.…

A Leap of Faith Sweaty palms, anxiety building inside the chest, face feeling flushed, all because of the one emotion that rattles more cages than anything else: fear. Fear has such a strong hold on each and every person in this world. It can drive us to do better in spite of it, or it can cause you to run as fast as you can in the other direction. I do not have many fears, but the one that trumps them all is heights. This fear has such a strong hold over me that I really was never looking to overcome it.…

August tenth of 2013, is the last day I remember. For the next hundred or so days after the aforementioned one, I don’t have a clue as to how they happened. The hardest part was, perhaps, my crumbling again, anxiety like I’d never had before. But not on August tenth. The first day of a new team and the last day of supposed sanity, I distinctly remember being afraid to be left alone with the then strangers.…

Getting off the plane, I felt like an adult for a moment. This defining moment of freedom and solitude made me realize I could go anywhere and do anything. Nostalgic memories were transitioning into new memories: climbing trees, picking fruits and playing jumpsies with my friends, until it got dark and I had to go home. Although, these moments still define my childhood, everything was different.…
