Captain Shreve High School: A Short Story

As the loud clanging of the bell resounded in my ears students stampeded for the door, class finished for the day. Having few friends at Captain Shreve High School, I spent the majority of my afternoons at my friend Stephen’s house. Stephen stood an inch taller than I at five-foot four with disheveled chestnut hair sewn with blonde highlights. As he was not from Shreveport, he didn’t have anyone he trusted, or knew for that matter, leading us to become tremendously close throughout middle school, and as I had no siblings, we had become as brothers. Though we now attended different schools, we vowed to always be there for one another. We were brothers. After school finished for the day, we would meet up to play basketball, game online, or even …show more content…
When I finally arrived at his house I decided to merely let myself in as I habitually did. As I approached, I caught a strong combination of aromas and realized that they had been drinking and passing around a sort of drug cocktail they had crafted. The room was a mess with miniscule, torn scraps of paper, presumably used to wrap their various drugs, beer cans, and what I was hoping were splashes of spilled beer on the carpet. As I approach closer I see Stephen, David, and a couple unknown, ominous looking figures passing around a bowl. With a slight wave of his hand, Stephen motioned for me to join in on their “good time,” but as this wasn’t an activity I was keen of, I hastily made an excuse to head out after a few minutes. Over the next few months Stephen spent increasingly more time with David and in turn, began to slowly transform. Each time I met up with Stephen he was either ludicrously drunk or trying a new drug; searching for that new high. I confronted him on this “transformation” accordingly various times, however, my inquiries would be immediately dismissed with no regard for the issue. Stephen was slowly following in his brother’s footsteps, and I, forced to watch powerless from the

Red and orange leaves fluttered to life in the gust of wind. Some of them broke free from their branches to dance in the breeze.…

It was the beginning of high school, the start of a new chapter in my life; after coming into the school, the mall looked like the feeding of the five thousand. St. Thomas More has over a thousand students, and every single one was there on that first day, trying to find the way to their new classes just like me. Walking through the halls of St. Thomas More with the unfamiliar smell of the classrooms reminded me of what lies ahead. I thought it was going to be difficult, because I wouldn’t see anyone I know. Fortunately, some of my old friends from St. Pius were in my gym class, so I was glad that I would not be alone in gym class.…

Essentially, what every adult thought the cool kids were like nowadays, a joke he took pretty well.…

As I opened the door to the abandoned, old, haunted house on my street, I started to think that maybe this wasn't such a good idea. I scolded myself for wanting to turn back, and hesitantly stepped inside to explore. My ombre hair and dark brown eyes made me practically camouflage in the tan-brown, wood-paneled foyer, except for my old grey hooded sweatshirt and comfortable red sweat pants. I was the average height for a 16 year old, maybe a little more scrawny and immature. I could feel the dust that my hair was collecting after every five seconds of brushing the dust off.…

It’s a town filled with farms and the whole county goes to the same high school. Most people that lived close together know each other, yet the friendliness that is given and received is just a social norm that people felt like they had to follow. In reality, most were bitter and gossiped about how Steve did this, or Rachel didn’t show up to church. Simple, stupid things that in the long run mean nothing, however without these high school-like characteristics, they would find themselves lacking any real content to discus. Then there’s me, at four years of age I will start my first day at Pinebrook elementary school, a school surrounded by rows of corn as far as my eyes can see coming over the bridge towards the…
