Hell Week: A Personal Journal Analysis

Lovingly referred to as Hell Week, the intense stage rehearsals leading up to the opening of The Nutcracker leave me completely exhausted. Add preparing for and taking college finals as a high school student and you have one worn out person. My first year of attempting to muddle through both of these individually stressful undertakings left me in a puddle of frustration and tears multiple times. Two years later, I finally have the system down and manage to strut through Hell Week like it’s a walk in the park. Through these hectic points in my life, I have learned to balance both my academics and extracurricular activities on an extremely busy schedule. While the balancing act between my involvement in ballet and my academic pursuits might differ slightly from pursuing a degree in biochemistry, this ability to manage my time effectively has prepared me for a rigorous course load at the University of Washington as a biochemistry major in preparation for Medical School.

When I visited George Washington my sophomore year of high school, I instantly knew that your school is where I wanted to go for college. It just wasn't like any of the other colleges that I had seen before, and for that matter it was unlike any I have seen since. I saw that GW is in a beautiful location and that its presence in the capitol greatly enhances both its value and the city’s around it. I really liked walking around the campus, as it was extremely vibrant. I saw that safety is also important, and the combination of security that holds jurisdiction in this area is extremely reassuring.…

Upon enrolling in high school I realized that I could no longer put an average effort into easy class work and be rewarded with academic satisfaction. After joining the honors course along with band and the FFA, it was revealed to me that high school was a different culture than middle school. I quickly discovered that hard work would be required to be successful in everything I will ever do. Band demanded countless hours of practice, but I ultimately gained first chair in the top band, as well as squad leader over the trumpet section. Like band, the FFA required hours of dedication, but I distinguished myself from other FFA members.…

At boot camp we had one week called Hell Week, where there’s 3 tiers of challenges. In Hell Week we slept for 2 hours in one week. I was pushed harder than any other camp or challenge I’ve ever done. To get breakfast we had to run 1 mile with a 180-pound boat on our heads. We had to swim in water less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit when we have been awake for 72 hours.…

My professional goal is to obtain a Walden’s Master of Social Work degree with a specialization in crisis and trauma intervention. I would especially like to work with individuals affected by crisis, trauma, and grief, and help them overcome their personal and social problems that have, without a doubt, strong negative influences on their lives. Studying at Walden University is important to me, because this school will give me the knowledge and skills that I need to help people make the most of their own abilities, develop skills, and empower them to reach their goals. In the future, after gaining more knowledge and experience about mental health, I want to create mental health service agencies across the United States that will help the…

I was finally free. I had more free time, less stress, and had lost the feeling of sweat dripping down my back. Quitting marching band was one of the best decisions I had ever made, and even though I was happy to be free, I had reservations about quitting. In my mind, band was where I would find people I identified with, but in reality, I didn’t find anyone who shared my interests. I longed to find a group that I fit in with.…

I was unfamiliar with the process of choosing the order of courses that would transition me to graduation. As a result, I took several non-required courses, and I even took some of the needed courses, for my degree, out of order. Needless to say, I hit an academic wall that lasted five long semesters. It would have been easier for me to change majors for the sake of graduation, but being in such a predicament only sharpened my perseverance and molded my determination.
