Essay: A Career As A Speech-Language Pathologist

After high school, I felt rushed to decide on a degree and chose Nursing on a whim, after a year of doing basics I decided to research all the degree choices Texas State University had to offer. I found that getting a Bachelors in Communication Disorders would be the first step I had to take to become a speech-language pathologist, I will be graduating from Texas State University in May 2017 with a Bachelor's Degree in Communication Disorders. I am hoping to pursue a Master's in Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of North Texas.
My overall goal is to become a speech-language pathologist who is compassionate, organized, resourceful, and collaborative. I have displayed each of these characteristics through my volunteer work

Schwarz in her Bias Project at Texas State with de-identifying data, coding data, and attending meetings to discuss current research that related to the project. I also assisted Dr. Resendiz at Texas State with editing videos for a professional presentation. Although this work was tedious and detailed, it showed me that putting extra care and attention yields to accomplishment and completing research furthers the whole field. As a speech-language pathologist I would want to continue my interest in research by keeping up to date with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Texas State University has an observation class that allows undergraduate students to aide graduate students with their clients. This class allowed me to focus in on my strengths and weaknesses in a clinical setting. Awareness of those strengths and weaknesses prepares me for graduate school on what I must work on to become a successful student and clinician.
Throughout my undergraduate career, I have demonstrated dedication. I have worked both full-time and part-time during my studies and have learned how to have a balance between school, work, and volunteer opportunities. I used clever organization to better my welfare and grades. Already having experienced the effects of being overworked allowed me to learn my limits and plan, knowing these limitations will benefit me in the rigorous coursework of graduate
