Gmo Effect On The Environment Essay

GMO’s or genetically modified organisms, were first introduced into the general population in 1982 when the FDA approved the first GMO. Since then, their usage highly increased, resulting in many Gmo foods being eaten a majority of people. Over the following years, the production of the GMO’s increased, along with their negative effects. Agriculture in high scales already hurts the environment, and the overproduction of food that the GMO’s result in directly harms the environment on an even larger scale. These large amounts of food are of lower quality, due to the high amounts of pesticide, and lots of times, the food doesn 't get the people who need it. The continuation of production of GMO’s in the United States is stressful on the environment, and the resulting product isn 't quality enough to make it all worthwhile. Most of the GM plants are unnaturally modified to be pest and weed resistant, this could potentially mean that pesticides would no longer need to be used, however, GM plants actually use quite an exorbitant amount of pesticide. GMOs cross pollinate and their seeds can travel around their surrounding ecosystem. It is impossible to fully clean up our contaminated gene pool. Self-propagating GMO pollution will outlast the effects of global warming and nuclear waste. In summary, these contaminated genes have already been introduced into our environment, but in order to regain any control over our environment the GMO production and usage should be completely stopped, or highly reduced to help our environment recover even just a little bit to try to preserve our planet for as long as we
