GMO Persuasive Essay

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are in most ways beneficial to agriculture. GM crops could stimulate growth and nutrition in developing countries, and there are also no completely proven risks to safety. With more research and labeling of GMOs, the country could become more accepting of this new development in agriculture. This would be a benefit for everyone. GM crops are both easier to grow and more efficient. They can be resistant to pests, herbicides, drought and disease (Whitman). However, there has not been enough conclusive evidence to conclude that GMOs are bad for humans. Banning GMOs would not solve a problem like this anyways, as nearly everyone takes in GM soybean products. It could even be argued that GM crops are safer than regular crops if they are designed to be resistant to pests. These plants would not need heavy duty chemicals to protect them, and there would be less damage to the environment around them. Pesticides in runoff can kill organisms that it was not intended for, but with pest resistance built in, pesticides are not needed. There are no proven health risks associated with GMOs, but there are many beneficial aspects and they outweigh any possible negatives. In conclusion, GM crops are easier to produce and can be healthier. Though there are some problems with monopolies, these can be fixed by requiring labeling of GMOs. It is also a right of the consumer to know what is in their food. The concerns about the safety of GMOs are unfounded and GM crops even have the possibility to be safer than regular crops.
