Food Allergies are on the rise around the world today, especially among children. This is a major problem for families, schools, and hospitals when dealing with children who have food allergies, some of which can be life threatening. Since this is such a serious problem genetically modified foods (GMOs) should be a concern for those whom or don’t suffer from food allergies, since they are not tested, regulated or required to be labeled (organic consumer), this is why food allergies are on the rise today. My intended audience in my English class may have severe food allergies, and surely some of them have family members with food allergies. It’s a food that triggers the bodys immune sytem. The reaction can be mild for some people but to others it can be a deadly reaction that type of reaction is called Anaphylaxis; is a serious allergic reaction that can rapidly onset the body and may cause death (Wikipedia). The first time eat t0he upsetting food, your immune system responds by creating specific disease-fighting antibodies called immunoglobulin. When you eat the food again, the immunoglobulin antibodies spring into action, by discharging ample amounts of histamine in an effort to banish the "foreign trespasser" from your body. Histamine is a powerful chemical that can affect the respiratory system, digestive tract, skin or cardiovascular system. (http://www.webmd.com/allergies/food-allergies) According to the NIAID, which stands for; “The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases” During an allergic reaction, the immune system responds to a normaly harmless substance as if it were a threat. Ninety percent of allergic reactions that occur in the United States come from eight foods which are milk, eggs, penuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish (http://www.geneticliteracyproject.org/2014/04/16/are-gmos-causing-an-increase-in-allergies/)..
