I truly do feel your race & religion play a role in how you are viewed in society. In other words hosseini is basically introducing the idea to amir that he's never been viewed or lived a true average afghanistan lifestyle. Amir’s father has always had money so he never had to deal with the same issues others in afghanistan had to deal with. Not that amir was viewed and treated badly in society, it's just he never had to deal with the same struggles as 95% of the afghanistan population, so they looked at him differently like a “tourist”.
