While Amir and Hassan are being bullied by Assef, Amir questions his friendship: "How can you talk to him [Hassan], play with him, let him touch you?...How can you call him your 'friend '?...But he 's not my friend! I almost blurted. He 's my servant! Had I really thought that?...I turned and came face to face with Hassan 's slingshot[that was aimed at Assef]"(41). Speculating the quote, Amir is shown to have a weak resolve where he is easily persuaded. Hassan, on the other hand, bravely pulls out his slingshot immediately to protect Amir. In this scene, Hassan is speculated as a hero compared to the weak Amir. He shows of hesitation to save Amir. Amir on the other hand is the weak link and has wavering thoughts about their relationship. Another strong characteristic that Hassan portrays is strength. A few weeks after the traumatic rape, Amir and Hassan meet under a pomegranate tree. Amir breaks down and attacks Hassan: " 'What would you do if I hit you with this? ' I said, tossing the fruit up and down... 'What would you do? ' I repeated...It struck him in the chest and exploded in a spray of red pulp. Hassan 's cry was pregnant with surprise and pain. Amir visits Afghanistan once again when Rahim Khan calls him. In his visit to Rahim Khan 's house, they discuss how Hassan lived: "Hassan tended to the flowers in the garden, soaked the roots, picked off yellowing leaves, and planted rose bushes. He painted the walls. In the house, he swept rooms no one had slept in for years, and cleaned bathrooms no one had bathed in. Like he was preparing the someone 's return...
