With the start of another season of football, nine teams came together and went head to head during a two-day flag football tournament, fundraising for a cause.
In memory of childhood friend, Lashawn Jamison, local resident Jeremy Johnson hosted the fundraiser event, “Play It Forward,” at Miller Park, to provide financial support to the Jamison family, since their loss of a loved one.
Johnson said, “I love my town and I love coming together as a community to get stuff done. You can feel the love from every corner of this town.”
Bringing the community together to help support the drowning victim’s family, Johnson said it truly made him happy receiving the support of family and friends.
“I'm BEYOND proud of all nine teams this year, regardless

In Odessa, Texas, only one thing matters. Not college, or politics, or work, but high school football. In the book Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, A Dream by H.G. Bissinger, the town of Odessa is placed under a microscope as the reader gets to experience the intersection of sport, race, and gender in a small Texas town. “Football stood at the very core of what the town was about, not on the outskirts, not on the periphery. In sixth grade, I wanted nothing more than to make Lusher’s middle school flag football team. I had dreamed of being on the team from the very first day I heard about it; all of my friends were trying out with me; and we had grand plans for a year of non-contact, semi-athletic exertion ahead of us. Having been anxiously awaiting the lunch period when the team roster would be revealed, I was thusly dismayed, disappointed, and disheartened when my name was not one of the eighteen posted on the PE office door. My mother, in all her eternal wisdom, saw a way out of the pit of despair I had sunk into: Lusher was starting an Academic Games team, and she thought I might enjoy playing. I was more than somewhat hesitant; she was more than somewhat…

The social awareness aspect of this project is one that I didn’t get to cover as much as I would’ve liked, because it’s not the primary focus of my question. My question specifically asks about the effect of the concussion crisis on the sport of football. I did mention that the majority (two-thirds) of NFL players are African-American, and I was able to show an image in my presentation to try and illustrate that racial disparity. But it wasn’t enough, mostly because I was strapped for time, and had to pick what I could focus on. The racial aspect wasn’t of immediate importance to the question, but it’s a huge part nonetheless.…
