Personal Narrative: Burnet High School Football

As the sun plummets to its end on a Friday evening, in a small town just north of the capital of Texas. Businesses become calm and streets become lifeless, as an entire community packs into a stadium anxious to see their team go into battle versus that week’s opponent. The level of excitement that has been accumulating all week, rings throughout the stadium as everyone longs for the opening kickoff to heal their Friday football fever.
As a four year old I wasn’t able to realize that I was witnessing the greatest football team to ever come through Burnet High School, as they demolished every team that was brave enough to step in front of them week after week. Yet, it didn’t take me long to recognize the reason why that team was so successful. It wasn’t because every single player was bigger, faster, and stronger than their opponent; nevertheless, there was definitely plenty of talent that made up that team. But rather, every single player put their teammates before themselves and played with abundant unselfishness. They were a family.

I remember specific players that I admired and looked up to, such as Stephen McGee and Jordan Shipley -who would both later play in college and the NFL- that could have very well been arrogant and egotistical with the talents they possessed. However, they were the complete opposite on and off the field, as they set an example for every spectator that was in attendance. Humility. A trait that easily goes unnoticed, but one that made these two great. They were both selfless and were strong bases for their team and made everyone in the community feel as if they were part of the success
