Walking into the theatre room, it was set up as a black box. The set-up of Fefu’s Country House used realistic furniture and had a kitchen to the left of the stage. The actor’s utilized all of their space that they had and used several different exit and entrance. The audiences were close to the stage and were on the right and in front of the actors. In the beginning of the production the setting started in the living room, where Fefu and the other actors were introduced and the audience began to gain brief knowledge of who the actors were. During the middle of the production, the actors used different scenes within Fefu’s House. Some of the scenes that were used were the yard, the living room, Julia guest room, and the kitchen. It also help develop the statements in an entertaining way. The disadvantages that the playwright has in choosing theatre as a vehicle for political statement is that it doesn’t share the same time period as the audience. Some of the language being spoken doesn’t relate to the present time. The responsibilities that the director and cast/ crew members have in making sure that the audience understand what the play is about. The way that they can do this is by changing some of the words to fit better with the time period. Giving the audience a background on the setting and about the play itself, to help the audience understand. During the play, being a part of the audience I did not really catch the political views and statements that they were focusing on till the end and yet I was still confuse about what was going on and what the play was about. Seeing the play I notice how the actors interacted with their audience, the setting of the play, and the lighting effects. The actors knew where their audience were and how to properly interact with them. An example of that moment is when Emma speech was not only on the stage but in the seating arrangement of where the audience was. By her doing this it gain the audience attention and showed her interaction. Another thing that was noticeable from what was discuss in class was how the setting of the play was. There was real furniture making the setting more realistic. Not only did the furniture make it realistic but having the water fight, cricket game equipment, and the alcohol made it more realistic. And lastly the lighting effects, they made the audience knew what time

I was extremely excited to watch Brooklyn College’s rendition of Speech and Debate. The reasoning behind my excitement was that whilst reading the play written by Stephan Karam, I quickly realized that it’s humor and authenticity were aspects that I typically enjoy to a great extent in stories, whether that be in the form of a television show, movie, or play. I also felt that I was readily prepared to watch the show meticulously and focus on its acting and casting aspects. I chose the acting facet of the production to be the focal point of my review yet again because I understand that I could have pushed further and been more detail oriented when writing my previous review. Brooklyn College’s Speech and Debate had a small cast of four actors.…

Metamorphoses appealed to me as I have always been drawn to plays compiled of vignettes as an audience member. The similarly styled production Almost Maine, by John Cariani, is my personal favorite due to its vignette nature. As a director, I saw the potential with the range of characters. Once I put down the play after first reading it, I had a lot of ideas running amuck. To help identify what my vision was in simpler terms and start to filter my ideas, I began by defining a shape, color, and size of what I wanted the audience to feel from the play.…

The following in-depth dissection of peters brook’s chapter on deadly theatre within his published book titled The Empty Space will give us a greater insight into not only Brook himself but perhaps his methodology. Deadly theatre is only one of four types of theatre brook describes in vivid detail within the book. Of the four deadly theatre is an entire chapter dedicated on what not to do and why as it is more often classified as boring and otherwise not engaging to the audience, even predictable. Directors, writers and actors all fall back on safe methods of cliché’s and tropes in order to stay safe or perhaps out of sheer laziness. Deadly theatre, being the most common type, avoids exploring other new and interesting avenues.…

Venue: In this production, the type of stage I will be using is the black box theater. The reason I choose this stage is because it is more up close and personal. Since this play is in a small area and only features two people, a closer audience will be required. Furthermore, this will give the audience more of a feeling like they are experiencing what is going on, like they are a part of the show. Also impacting the show and making the character feel like they are in the actual café, since it would contain an abundant of people.…

In a historical context, the film takes place in the midst of the Great Depression era which adds to the complexity of Cecilia’s love triangle. Through a combination of deep focus displayed in shot 20 and 31, as well as the use of figure movement in shot 5, Purple Rose of Cairo presents Cecilia as a paradigm of us spectators to be critically self-reflective in our relationship to movies.…
