Many plays have content that is arguably political and often plays that seem the farthest from politics have elements that some viewers see as a statement of political opinion. Political plays often do not deal directly with political officials but with current events and political standpoints regarding those issues. Both Rent and The Accidental Death of an Anarchist deal with issues current at the time of their creation and though focused on different issues they use very similar tactics like humor, direct address, and having the political action happen more to secondary roles as opposed to the main character, often to achieve their goals of bringing to light the problems they strive to discuss.

With Rent which focuses heavily on AIDS and how to live with or love with it, we find the main character disease free and alone but many of the secondary characters are suffering from it and learning how to deal. The Accidental Death of an Anarchist does a similar thing; this play deals with possible corruption within the police force as well as the events surrounding the Italian railway in 1969. But instead of making the main character either a corrupt policeman or Pinelli the anarchist himself, they have the main character be a mischievous fraud who happens to be arrested at the time of these events. This tactic allows the main character to act as a barrier between the action so the audience does not feel personally attacked while also giving them a window into the issues. Political theater is everywhere and presents itself in many different ways. There is no set list of tactics that all political theater plays use or don’t use. That being said many different tools can be used to create a play that calls attention to the issue without leaving the audience so offended that they refuse to listen to the message of the play.
