There were many political problems within the Western Rome government. To begin with, there were several emperors that were unfit to be emperors. Those emperors were extremely greedy and cruel. All of the emperors were born or adopted into the family. The taxes were raised and there were increased salary demands coming from the legions. Along with that, there were more imports being made than exports. This caused the economic growth to decrease. There were high tariffs put onto imported goods. These taxes caused people to become even more unhappy with the economics. Pirates started stealing gold, treasure, food, etc, in the Mediterranean Sea. Western Rome stopped conquering new land. This is a reason Western Rome’s gold count dropped significantly. This forced the Romans to make coins with less gold, meaning they are worth less, causing inflation. In addition to coins having less gold, there was also fewer coins being produced. People had to start bartering instead of exchanging money, causing limited money flow. Farming decreased a great deal, resulting in famine and financial difficulties for merchants and farmers. The Western Roman Empire was huge, too huge, actually. The Western Roman Empire was so huge that legions were not able to protect it all. Western Rome had walls that were unprotected, along with natural borders; including mountains and rivers. Though Western Rome had frontier boundaries, there weren’t enough legionnaires to guard it. The legions weakened. This forced Western Rome to hire Germanic mercenaries; the mercenaries turned against Western Rome. The Legionnaires were so busy with money and control that they, essentially, forgot to do their job. There were Germanic tribes that invaded Western Rome. Frozen lakes were a huge help to get into Western Rome. The lakes made it so that they could just walk over the lakes. The Germanic tribes destroyed the Roman aqueducts, causing the loss of the water they had.
