All over the world, books of all varieties are being banned. The ban of books should never happen, because it stops the world from having a variety of material to learn from. Books should not be banned based on a group's beliefs, the ban denies an author freedom of speech, and the laws which prove whether a book is obscene or not are very unclear. Books should not be banned based on a single person or group's religious, moral, or political beliefs. Many books have been banned based on those reasons. The world has many different religions and political parties, as well as many individuals who each have different moral and personal beliefs. All of these different factors mean that not everyone will agree with the ban of a book, therefore causing arguments. When petitioning for a book to be banned, the people who wish for the book to be banned may not take into account that at the time some books were written, terms and ideas used in the writing were acceptable. Novels like, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by author Harper Lee are often under the microscope due to terms used in the novel. The book has been pulled out of many school reading lists due to this, and many people are fighting the ban because they do not believe that a book should be banned based on one term used in an award winning novel. Books are a way for the public to see what the past was like for groups of people, and to understand the suffering, or victory, said groups experienced. Many book bans are focused on restricting children's access to some books, due to some people feeling that the books content and themes go against their personal morals, and they feel that their children should not be taught these things. For example, teacher James Chamberlain became the centre of his school boards attention after using select books to teach his kindergarten class about same sex families. Following the school boards choice to ban these books, "… 5,000 letters supporting the decision to ban the books, and 1,000 decrying the ban." (¶ 7). Banning these books based on one group's view, denies the rest of the public from having the ability to understand these events. The ban of books denies an author freedom of speech. …show more content…
When a book gets banned, the author may end up involving the courts, especially if the author feels that, "his or her freedom of speech is being impeded." (¶ 3). When freedom of speech is being impeded, an outcry supporting the victims often happens, which could result in millions of dollars being used to take cases to court. Furthermore, the use police force may be needed to stop protests. Banning books takes away the right to speak freely, because it is telling the public that they can speak, but that they cannot do anything with their thoughts, such as write and publish a novel. Many groups, such as 'Freedom to Read' , which is a branch of the Books and Periodicals Council, are fighting for freedom of speech and the toleration of all material that could be considered controversial. The ability to have freedom of speech is a right that so many people around the world do not have, so the countries where it is a right should not take it away based on language in literature. Many
