There are many ways the Human Resources can offer continued support in the area of career development. These continued efforts are vital to creating a sense of responsibility within the employee for managing their career and building confidence in themselves. One of the most important things a Human Resource department can do is to make sure that that they have the support of the department heads/managers as they are directly responsible for the day to day activities of each employee and have direct insights into the needs of the department and the employees. Routine assessments allow management to meet with employees, discuss needs within the workplace/department and how those needs correlate to the responsibilities of the employee. This is when annual employee goals can be discussed and set as well as specific measurements to track progress throughout the year. Assessments are essential to management as it gives one insight to the interest and desires of each employee. Where/how do they see themselves moving throughout the company? What programs might need to be implemented or offered to employees in order to provide adequate training? Meeting with employees regularly throughout the calendar year keeps both the employer and the employee on the same page and issues can be addressed as they arise keeping employees in a forward moving direction.
