To be an ESL student in the regular classroom is not easy for the students and the teachers. Researchers agree that most of the time, the high school and middle school teachers are less prepared to receive this type of students in their classroom (DelliCarpini). I am an ESL student in this type of classroom. It was very hard for me at the beginning. Moving here by myself was very difficult. Everything was so new for me like house, school, people, and food. I was living at the dorm with people I never see before in my life that was very weird for me. My first years, I was sick all the time because of the food was very new for me and most of the fruit were not fresh. The dorm people were very nice with me but the school people little bit. I was crying a lot because that was the first time, I left home by myself. My first day at school, I was working with a dictionary at school because I know nothing about English and if I want to say something I need to search first before open my mouth. People were making fun of me but I was here for learn and I did not care about what people things. At school, I have a lot of problems understand most of my teachers. …show more content…
I go hard time making friend at school because I am scared to talk most of the time and I do not know how to approach people. To help that situation, the teachers can ask one of the regular student to be the helper. That student will help the ESL students with school work, stay with them during the pause or at lunch time. That will make the ESL students do not feel alone. Even the students can show them, how to be better in English. The way their can study if the teacher is not giving them enough information. Because some teachers do not really what to do when they give you homework and when you get home we are lost, do not know what to do. Have help for ESL students is very important for

An ELL student is described as a linguistically and culturally diverse student who is learning the English language in addition to his or her native language. In my current fieldwork experience and to the best of my knowledge, there are no ELLs students attending any of the classes that I currently observe. From what I’ve observed, the classes I attend are not highly diversified by ELL’s, those students who are, seem to speak English fluently with no noticeable difficulty. Therefore, I am unable to give any descriptions on learning accommodations as of now on ELL’s. However, there were many lessons that did observe that accommodated different learning styles, that would also help ELL students if they were present in the classroom, such as, visual, auditory and tactile learning accommodations.…

Once I got settled in the Quad cities. It was time to start school. I was so scare. I was starting a new life. I didn 't know English. I didn 't have friends. It was the start of a new life. The very first issues were communication, which include reading and writing. I was unable to communicate with people. So it was a huge struggle for me. There were times that I would come home crying. In my opinion English is the hardest language to learn. The class work was really difficult for me. I couldn 't understand a single word of what the class was about. My lack of knowledge of the language was one of my biggest challenges. Also, I did not know anyone in the United States, except for my family members at home, so it was really hard for me to make new friends. At Kealing Middle School, my very first day of eighth grade was the hardest day of my life. Everything was different: the language, the signs on the walls, the building, the food, the teachers, the classes, and especially the people around the school. The environment was crowded, and everyone seemed to be happy except for me. The students around the school totally ignored me every time I passed by them as if I was invisible. That was not normal for me at all because at my school in Mexico, almost everyone knew me. I was that person from whom everyone would ask questions. I was not the most popular student in the school, but at least everyone knew who I was. Back in my country, school was so simple and understandable. In the United States, everything seemed to be a thousand times more difficult than it really was. Even the most insignificant thing was really hard for me to do. Asking how to get to a classroom was the toughest task because I didn 't even know how to say it. Even if I figured out how to ask how to get to a place, I could not find the room because I could not understand the response. I would find a person and ask, "Room 240?" They would answer, "Oh that room is down this hallway right in front of the principal 's office." Those words seemed to travel a hundred miles per hour. I would just nod and start walking around the school until I found the room I was looking for. That whole day was like an eternity, I was just waiting for the last bell to ring. When I came back to my house, I did not want to go back to school ever…

She said the most positive thing about having these ELL students in her classroom is that they got to share their cultures with the other students during her “Holidays around the World Unit.” She also said that Oskaloosa has an excellent ELL teacher, Mrs. Cochran, who really helps to keep ELL students on track with where they are in class. When it comes to the frustrating parts of having ELL students is not having the resources to help them. She said that the many resources they do offer is an ELL book or companion guide to use, however, they do not always have access to those in our individual classrooms, which can become very…

Even though I was nervous, I was also excited to experience something new. First day of school arrived. The distance from the parking lot to the main entrance seemed like a four mile marathon. Once we arrived to the main entrance and walked in the main office to meet the counselor to pick up my class schedule, my mom left and I felt more lost than ever. She was the only one in the family that was fluent in English and she was my translator. How can I ask the simple questions, like “may I go to the bathroom.” I was nervous but the teachers and student were nice to me. We communicated with our hands like sign language, it seemed silly but it took us through our day little by little. I remember sitting in English class which to me was every single class. While in English class I was nervous, I couldn’t understand anything, I remember the first friend I made in school. Her name was Ashley, she was very nice and she helped me with everything since I couldn’t…

I used to do the bare minimum when it came to school, I took all the shortcuts I could. They used to assign us 15 to 20 words to repeat 10 times and write sentences for each, but I used write the words 10 times but I did not do the sentences, my mom used to do them for me. This got me to memorize the words, so I learn to spell them and I knew what they were but some words became difficult to put in sentences later on. She could not say no, I think she felt guilty for agreeing to let me repeat the grade. It was a win for me it seemed. But now that I think of it, it was not, it made me worse. I hated time reading so much, remembering elementary school is a pain. Maybe the shortcuts were not the best idea. Ideal ESL is supposed to make English easier but really I do not remember what was so great about it. I also do not remember how it was different from regular classes, it was more like a label.…

It is second to English, but Spanish has steadily raised every census done, they are projecting the in 2020 there will be a 5million increase of primary language Spanish speakers (United States Census, 2014). With this information the importance of being a culturally- responsive teacher is a necessity, being able to recognize the English language learner, also abbreviated to ELL, students in a class is of utmost importance. By being a culturally responsive teacher you are one step ahead, because you will have gotten to know your student as well as their family. By keeping the line of communication open a teacher will know what tests and or help each student in her class needs. This is also the best way to identify the special education student, also known as ESE, need to be tested to find out what their ability is. Volusia Pines Elementary does not have a special class for the ESE students or the ELL students, so this can be a little difficult for the teacher. Depending on the student ability sometimes the ESE student does a completely different level of work. Although there is a specific need for ESE, and ELL identifying their needs depends on test that are done on a monthly bases after the initial assessments are finished. The best way to identify these students is by the work they do, and their behavior. ESE and ELL students need to…

They were talking to the teacher in Spanish and English therefore, I wanted to double check if they were ELL and they were ELL students. The first SEI strategy that I noticed that the teacher implemented into her lesson was vocabulary and language development. She first started by going over the ABC’s with her students. They sang the ABC’s song and every one was involved. Then after this she read them the book “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” written by Bill Martin and John Archambault. This book was very beneficial to the student because it helps them with their vocabulary development. The story Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is an alphabet book where the alphabets climb up the coconut tree. Reading the students, a book aloud helped all students even the ELL because it helped to provide them with influential context of different word…

ELLs go through school that requires them to learn new concepts in a language that they have not become proficient in, and frequently, they are not yet proficient in their home language either. With the uniqueness of the situations that ELL students are in, teachers need to be as educated as they can be on teaching their ELL students. Professional development sessions will help with learning new teaching strategies, accommodations, and setting goals for students. “While supporting access to content, teachers of ELLs are called upon to accelerate English language development and literacy and, in bilingual classrooms, native language and literacy development. Thus, teachers need to know how to create classrooms that are supportive of using and learning language. Such classrooms benefit all students and are essential for ELLs” (Santos, Darling-Hammond, & Cheuk, n.d.). Having a successful classroom for all students can be achieved by attending professional development…

My cooperating teaching has been very informative this semester with answering questions about ESOL students and how to be an effective educator towards them. In the classroom, she has it set up where there are Spanish books in the library, labels throughout the room, and a special center just for her ELL students to focus on their work. I think that having Spanish books in the classroom is a brilliant idea. ELL students are learning a second language, but that doesn’t mean that we are trying to eliminate their first language. This will show ELL students that educators not only care about their education, but want to involve their first language into the classroom as well. I think labeling items in Spanish also helps ELL students recognize the item in their language and the second language that they are learning. These items are every day tools that they use, therefore it will be easy for the ELL students to remember because of the relation. The center area that is for the ELL students is an area where the teacher can give one-on-one support to help connect the dots when learning a new concept. Although, my cooperating teacher is doing a great job with supporting her ELL students, I recently read an article called "ELL Students in mainstreaming classroom" and it discusses what educators should do to support their ELL students…

Becher (2011) finds use the differentiated instruction can improve the quality of what the learners can remember and enhance. “As English teachers continue to encounter non-English speaking students in their classrooms, their skills in differentiating instruction will continue to expand. Tapping into the vast resources available online makes both sharing and discovering the strategies of other teachers easier than ever” (Becher, 2011, P71). Personally, differentiated instruction is the embodiment of the students communicate with their teachers. And teaching is the expression of the collaboration between students and teachers. Teachers can accurately understand the students’ personality and locate their level through communication in order that they can provide a suitable teaching method. For example, a method called cultural responsiveness, and how does it work in ESL classrooms. Teachers need prepare the background information from different students, and this step asked teachers have an conversation with their students. Next step, the group practice will encourage students talk with each other, then a cooperative presentation will show the knowledge they learn. Teachers use the textbook to correct students’ mistake and promote the development of speaking skills at the end. The communication and collaboration should be used in this…
