The communities people live in today are being formed by a multitude of political groups, volunteering opportunities, and immigrants. Living in a small town does not open a person’s eyes to all the hopes and dreams of others. Through these three service learning opportunities, Into the Streets, Mary Treglia Community House, and Presidential campaigns; I have learned how they impact our communities, the concepts of citizens, and my weaknesses and strengths when it comes to participating.
Summary of Activities: The first service learning experience I had was Into the Streets, a campus wide event that has all students and faculty volunteering around the community. During this affair the women’s soccer team was assigned to work at the Gospel Mission Thrift Store, where we hung and sorted clothes and later placed them on racks. On first arrival the racks for clothes were empty, after our four hour shift the clothes were smooshed together so tightly there was no room …show more content…
An ESL class is interactive and results can be recognized over a shorter period of time as those learning English pick up on the language. Mary Treglia is especially involved in their community and helping others transition into America without too much hassle. Presidential campaigns, especially the upcoming 2016 election, discuss matters concerning immigrants coming to the U.S.. A candidate’s goal is to give the best pitch about ideas that they are demanding to see follow through to form a better country. There results are based on supporters, campaign polls, and the final vote for president. This is a different approach to the other two activities since campaigns do not require volunteering but for citizens to be more involved in our government affairs and political movements.
