Essential Characteristics of Collaboration The following characteristics are necessary for effective collaboration to take place: clinical competency and accountability, common purpose, interpersonal competence and effective communication, trust, mutual effect, value of diversity, and humor. Clinical competence is the most important attribute needed to succeed in a collaborative experience (Hamric et al., 2014). In their professional role, one must be able to carry out their responsibilities in a knowledgeable manner. Among the team, a common purpose or goal is shared, for example regarding patient care. Interpersonal competence involves of the ability to effectively communicate simple to complex situations with others. Good communication requires willingness to listen and understanding the other person’s role (Swanson, 1997).

The issue was that there was a decline in providing medication teaching to patients. Patients would ask other disciplines about medications such as indications and side effects. Disciplines who do not have the basic knowledge of medications was not able to answer patients’ questions. As a team, the agreement was to add a simple basic teaching tool for medications in our software to share with patients. Further teaching, assessment, or evaluation required a licensed nurse. The team’s effectiveness was strong as evidenced each disciplines’ willingness to learn and participate in the plan. Team building requires active participation and clear communication towards a common goal (Cooper-Duffy & Eaker, 2017).
