Part B – Preparation for interview and application
1. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. My interpersonal and communication skills were developed through successfully interacting with patients, families and other staff members during placements. Oftentimes, handing over patients to other nurses or other healthcare professionals had to be completed for optimal care. I was able to develop my verbal communication skills by using ISBAR when handing over the patient to other nurses at the end of each shift. Written communication skills were practiced through completing progress notes with head-to-toe assessment or ABCDEFG assessment and using correct and appropriate medical terminology and abbreviations that is accepted by the NSW health, such as PAC (pressure area care) or IDC (indwelling catheter).
2. Demonstrated clinical knowledge and clinical problem solving abilities. I have excellently demonstrated my clinical knowledge and clinical problems solving abilities by thinking critically and accessing resources. For example, when a patient is complaining of pain, I can complete a PQRST pain assessment, check PRN pain medications and understand the policies and adverse events when administering schedule 8 drugs. Ability to work within a team requires effective communication skills and appropriate clinical knowledge to identify patient needs and help to resolve problems. For example, when I was doing my placement in the rehabilitation centre, I communicated with the physiotherapists before they commence their care with the patient. I provided them information about the patient regarding presence of any pain, surgical procedures the patient underwent and mobility. This would ensure the safety of both the physiotherapist and the
