Teamwork and Collaboration in Nursing and Healthcare
The core competency of teamwork and collaboration is one of the most important topics in the nursing industry. According to the Massachusetts Nursing Core Competencies (n.d.), teamwork and collaboration occurs when there is mutual regard, open communication, and shared decision-making that ultimately improves the caliber of patient care. To give patients the best care possible, nurses and inter-professional teams need to exhibit these characteristics to promote effective teamwork. This core competency is important to the future due to increasing productivity between nurses and inter-professional teams. This creates an atmosphere where quality of care is enhanced. Communication between nurses and collaborative teamwork is essential for patient safety. If the foundation of teamwork and trust is not established, then the benefits of effective teamwork will not be achieved.

From teaching medication administration to proper hygiene, asking for feedback is important for the nurse to determine if the patient has fully understood what has been taught.
